3️⃣ for Thursday
Music, Michigan and a writing tip.
1️⃣ Lake Michigan Livestreams
I’ve spent many summers over the past 30 years in northern Michigan, mostly in the small towns of Charlevoix and Petoskey, on Lake Michigan.
Earlier this year I found three live webcams around Charlevoix, but this is my favorite: the channel leading from Round Lake to Lake Michigan.
Not only do you get to watch all kinds of boats head out and come in from Lake Michigan — including the ferry to and from Beaver Island — you’ll see pedestrians walking alongside the channel, and once in a while, watch a storm move in from the west.
It’s mesmerizing.
2️⃣ Instead of This, Write That
Instead of "Thanks in advance", write "Thanks".
Instead of "In order to", write "To".
Instead of "That said" or "That being said", write "Nevertheless" or "Furthermore" or "Moreover". Or, you can move on to your next logical sentence.
3️⃣ The Best Music Year of the ‘80s? 1985
With the exception of 1984, I believe the best music years of the ‘80s were odd-numbered ... although I think 1989 is the weak link.
I’ve held strong in thinking 1985 was the best music year of the decade. After watching MTV’s “1985 - The Year in Rock” on YouTube, I’m now more confident than ever that it was.
So much happened that year: “We Are The World”, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (crossing over from late 1984), Live Aid, Farm Aid, and the somewhat-forgotten “Sun City.”
And lots of Madonna.
I hope you’re having a great week.
